The group of tribal members trying to amend the Little Shell Tribe's constitution will push forward in its efforts after a final ballot count today.
The Little Shell Alliance sent out over 3,000 ballots recently asking tribal members to vote on whether or not they are in favor of amending the tribe's constitution. The total ballot count came to 437 in favor of the change, with only six votes against.
The group says the amendment would add accountability and establish a tribal court to intervene in disputes between members and leadership.
James Parker Shield, Little Shell Alliance member, said that he is, "Ecstatic...very pleased. Not only with the election turnout but with the results itself. Those people that voted in favor of this have clearly indicated the will of the people for amending our constitution, holding new elections and taking back their tribal government."
Although just a fraction of the ballots were returned, Parker Shield says the response was the greatest any tribe election has seen.
He says the Alliance will now move forward with plans to hold a new election for tribal leadership.
A council made up of elders will appoint an election committee to set forth guidelines for the tribal election.
Parker Shield says that election will happen next month.
Current Tribal President John Sinclair has called the alliance's ballot process illegal and has threatened to take action.
